For anyone who grew up terrified of sewers

For anyone who grew up terrified of sewers, red balloons, or even the faint sound of circus music, Pennywise: The Story of It is a documentary that digs deep into why Stephen King’s infamous clown has haunted so many imaginations for decades. This film pulls back the curtain on the 1990 miniseries adaptation of It, showing how it was made, the choices that brought the story to life, and, most importantly, how Tim Curry’s unforgettable portrayal of Pennywise cemented the character as one of horror’s most enduring icons. The documentary shines when it dives into the creation of Curry’s Pennywise. Equal parts goofy and terrifying, his performance struck a balance that left kids in the ’90s (myself included) watching through their fingers, unsure whether to laugh or scream. What Pennywise: The Story of It does so well is remind us of just how much thought and creativity went into crafting that performance, from the makeup design to the mannerisms Curry brought to the role. It’s fascinating to see how a made-for-TV production, limited by budget and broadcast standards, managed to create something so lasting and effective. The film also touches on the darker elements of Stephen King’s original novel—the parts too disturbing to make it onto TV—that emphasize just how unsettling Pennywise’s mythology really is. These omissions, while necessary at the time, highlight how much scarier the story could have been, and the documentary acknowledges this contrast without taking away from what the miniseries accomplished. Beyond the clown, Pennywise: The Story of It celebrates the ensemble that made the miniseries resonate. The Losers’ Club, both young and adult, are given the spotlight, with behind-the-scenes stories that show how the cast chemistry brought King’s characters to life. For longtime fans, these interviews feel like revisiting old friends, while newcomers gain a deeper appreciation for why this adaptation holds such a special place in horror history. As a fan who grew up with the miniseries, what struck me most about this documentary was the sense of legacy. Curry’s Pennywise isn’t just a performance—it’s a cultural marker in the horror genre, one that still influences modern takes on the character. The documentary makes it clear that Pennywise belongs in the horror Hall of Fame, standing shoulder to shoulder with icons like Freddy, Jason, and Michael Myers. Ultimately, Pennywise: The Story of It is more than just a look back at a cult classic—it’s a love letter to a generation of horror fans who were scared out of their minds as kids and remain captivated to this day. Whether you’re revisiting childhood nightmares or discovering how this story first terrified audiences, this documentary is an essential watch.
