Plot summary

Unequivocal about the need for violence to force Britain out of Ireland, Father Eoin O’Donnell seals the fate of the young and impressionable Antaine by convincing him to fight in the 1916 Rising. Fifty years later, the reappearance of the now-experienced gunman Antaine in a divided Derry throws Father O’Donnell into turmoil. Once allies, the pair are now placed on opposite sides of the same agenda.

I thought the film was well written and

I thought the film was well written and acted.Not flashy or overdramatic in covering this complex topic of Irish history and its troubles.A solid 7.5 out of 10 from me.

Difficult subject simplified

A very difficult subject simplified. The foreign films slated for the Oscar this year were all masterpieces. Cold War, Shoplifters, Roma, Capernaum. All were amazing, jaw dropping this film should have a place at 2021. I had a tear running down my cheek - Penance simply broke my heart. This is film making is so good. See more
