The gags with the bricks and the elevator

The gags with the bricks and the elevator are excellent and overall this is an amusing short, yet it's also rather uneven, a fact made all the more obvious due to the two-act structure.

Chaplin's final short film is worth a quick

Chaplin's final short film is worth a quick couple of laughs, and is his only released film for 1922. In some ways this feels like a return to his roots: he plays a shirking laborer who looks for every opportunity to fuel his vices and avoid taking responsibility at home. It doesn't *feel* like a return to form, however, because most of the comedy is fresh as rain. I laughed out loud in the first minute of the picture when he abashedly presented a lily to his boss for being late to work. There aren't any fireworks or over-the-top shenanigans here, but it almost feels better for its simple presentation. Given its status as his last ever short, it was fitting subject matter. We get to say a final goodbye to the old Chaplin character of the tramp from the simple days when he drank more than he earned and lived only, unashamed and hilariously, for himself.
