Plot summary

Pasqualino Frafuso, known in Naples as "Pasqualino Seven Beauties" is a petty thief who lives off of the profits of his seven sisters while claiming to protect their honor at any cost, Pasqualino is arrested for murder and later sent to fight in the army after committing sexual assault. The Germans capture him and he gets sent to a concentration camp where he plots to make his escape by seducing a German officer.

The most audacious thing here is that Wertmüller

The most audacious thing here is that Wertmüller allows the central character to be neither a saint nor even just a regular person, he's a cad, a liar, and a murderer who survives WWII by doing so much worse.

One of my all-time favorite films with one

One of my all-time favorite films with one of my favorite actors. Giancarlo Giannini is absolutely brilliant as a strutting would-be lothario in a small Italian town. Mastroianni in Divorzio all'Italiano is his inspiration. The swagger, the cigarette holder... The theme running through the film is 'Tira a Campa' by Enzo Jannacci. The title is slang and in English would essentially mean 'you do what you have to do to survive.' It's chronicles Pasqualino's travails. A great piece of music. The scene in the courtroom when the verdict comes down plays out without a word, with the theme playing and shots of faces reacting. Just a mesmerizing segment. If you understand Italian, the dialogue is hilarious, save maybe the camp segment. The opening 'Oh Yeah' montage brings to mind Kubrick's use of Vera Lynn's 'We'll Meet Again' to accompany a jumble of nuclear explosions at the end of Dr Strangelove.

I've always thought I have a pretty high

I've always thought I have a pretty high tolerance level for dark comedy but this film definitely put that notion to the test. The film did feel shorter than the almost two hour run time but, considering I wasn't loving it, was more due to the fact I was so surprised at what I was witnessing. I am not sure if this disconnect was due more to a cultural or generational difference but much of the "humor" wasn't landing for me and at times became downright horrifying, with some scenes toward the end becoming hard to even watch. On a historical note this was the first film in which a woman was nominated for best director.
