Plot summary

Michael is a young boy living in a typical 1950s suburbanite home... except for his bizarre and horrific nightmares, and continued unease around his parents. Young Michael begins to suspect his parents are cooking more than just hamburgers on the grill outside, but has trouble explaining his fears to his new-found friend Sheila, or the school's social worker.

I completely forgot about this horror comedy movie

I completely forgot about this horror comedy movie, even though I had watched it several years ago. And I forgot character actor Bob Balaban directed it. Who knew trying to do a straight-laced story about a cannibalistic couple living with their young son in a typical 1950s suburban American community would be so horrific and funny at the same time? I am not someone who gets snooty about deep symbolism and allegorical meanings that might not even exist, but maybe this movie is about the birth and rise of the middle-class's savage, conspicuous consumerism during the post-World War II economic boom in the United States.
