Plot summary

I suppose some will see this exercise in existentialism fascinating. I found it confounding and unnecessary. Two-thirds of the way through the film, actors playing one role switch to assume a different role. And one actor becomes a substitute for a dog. Tiresome and over-thought.

Fresh from an American education, Ali is a thought-provoking professor posing deep questions to malleable minds whilst dealing with daily grinds. Eager to start a family, he faces pressure to step up as the man of the house, whilst clashing with his commandeering father. Infertility, trauma, guilt, grief, duality of self – the usual family affair. A quiet, moody piece, "The Things You Kill" morphs into a taut thriller that references many seemingly inconsequential images. Attention must be paid. The tables turn mid-film with a mirror scene transforming the main character into a David Lynch darkness. Reality is muddied as the plot train veers off the previously straight tracks. Cinematographically exquisite, barren scenery and saturated dusty interiors make for an unsettling yet inviting watch. Even when it is unclear as to what is being watched. A killer ending is both open ended enough to invite heated discussion, and revealing enough to satisfy the journey. Confusion can be terrific.
