Plot summary

Older Than Ireland features thirty men and women aged 100 years and over. Often funny and at times poignant, the film explores each centenarian's journey, from their birth at the dawn of Irish independence to their life as a centenarian in modern day Ireland. Older Than Ireland's observational style offers a rare insight into the personal lives of these remarkable individuals.

Enjoyable little Irish documentary about centenarians who talk

Enjoyable little Irish documentary about centenarians who talk about their 100+ years living in Ireland. Funny at times and touching & sad at times. Thank goodness for the subtitles. Those accents...WOW.

I miss my grandparents. I miss sitting down with them, having a cup of tea and hearing random stories about their life. This documentary helped fill some of that void.The centenarians featured here are all Irish, and all characters. What incredible lives they have all lived! I laughed numerous times throughout - so perhaps a sense of humour is one of the 'secrets' to longevity? There were also plenty of emotional moments, such as when they talked about being widowed.First kisses, marriages and 'love' were fantastic subjects to hear their perspectives on. Interesting too were inventions, Ireland's history and what they think the meaning of life is. This little documentary featured a bit of everything and was incredibly sweet and heartwarming.I guess all we can do is be kind to others and try live our best lives. If any of us live a life as fulfilling as the ladies and gentlemen depicted here, then I think we'd be doing alright!

Refreshing film - but shot in irritating ironic style

Nice poignant film that takes a realistic approach to older people and their stories and gives us a glimpse into their lives.It was spoilt somewhat by the rather knowing photography, single point, 'Martin Parr-ish' details where you were constantly imagining the director thinking 'ooh this will be clever...'Plus the irritatingly jaunty piano added to that 'one eye on the awards season' feel. When wrapped in this kind of package I felt the subjects and their stories didn't quite connect as they should and were relegated ever so slightly to a director's ambitions rather than making a powerful and rewarding connection that might have brought more of their personalities to the fore.Time to put the Parr book back on the shelf and maybe look at Markéta Luskacová's work...
