Plot summary

A bad day gets worse for young detective Murakami when a pickpocket steals his gun on a hot, crowded bus. Desperate to right the wrong, he goes undercover, scavenging Tokyo’s sweltering streets for the stray dog whose desperation has led him to a life of crime. With each step, cop and criminal’s lives become more intertwined and the investigation becomes an examination of Murakami’s own dark side.

A slow burn that rewards its viewers patience

A slow burn that rewards its viewers patience with compelling characters and emotionally poignant storytelling. Its first half could have used some editing, (particularly the undercover and baseball game sequences), but once the plot begins to pick up around the one hour mark, it becomes a superlative piece of detective fiction. Toshirô Mifune and Takashi Shimura are perfectly cast as the rookie cop and wisened veteran (a pairing inspired by Kurosawa's admiration for The Naked City), and Keiko Awaji stands out as the uncooperative witness. Kurosawa effectively sets up his villain as a foil for the younger detective, and uses this connection to examine the sociological setting of urban postwar Japan, culminating in a climactic final sequence that is as thrilling -- and moving -- as anything ever put to film.

Stray Dog is a 1949 Japanese crime drama

Stray Dog is a 1949 Japanese crime drama noir film directed and co-written by Akira Kurosawa, starring Toshiro Mifune and Takashi Shimura. It was Kurosawa's second film of 1949 produced by the Film Art Association and released by Shintoho. It is also considered a detective movie (among the earliest films in that genre) that explores the mood of Japan during its painful postwar recovery. The film is also considered a precursor to the contemporary police procedural and buddy cop film genres, based on its premise of pairing two cops with different personalities and motivations together on a difficult case. At the 1950 Mainichi Film Concours, it won awards for Best Actor (Takashi Shimura), Best Film Score (Fumio Hayasaka), Best Cinematography (Asakazu Nakai) and Best Art Direction (Sō Matsuyama). Vision wrote "the film was the first Japanese film to incorporate police procedurals and the buddy cop. Takashi and Toshira show their true acting talents. An epic ending! Overall, Tifune's learning created a great tempo for the talented apprentice who becomes the good cop. Four fries!"
