It's rather difficult to feel anything for the

It's rather difficult to feel anything for the lead character, and it's even more difficult to determine what you should actually be feeling. The vague character model, combined with James Cagney's masterful performance provides the viewer with a strange confusing feeling. It's also difficult to pinpoint whether the problem is with the source material itself, or maybe it's translation to the screen, but the end result is confusing. Well, if you don't look too much into it, you can still have a good time. That is, if you watch the film only "skin-deep" you can appreciate the solid story and performances, but its when some introspective comes in that the story falls apart. Also, I wish that Jimmy had more musical performances. He only had about a couple of minutes of musical performance all together. Rather disappointing.

A dumb concept--one of Cagney's few misfires

Well, I gotta say one thing about this film--the concept certainly is unusual. The film is a comedic musical all about gangsters! But, unfortunately it isn't very funny and the songs aren't very good. If you were expecting GUYS AND DOLLS, you are in for a big disappointment. Instead, the movie looks and feels pretty dull and uninvolving. In a way, I would love to have seen the Jimmy Cagney from WHITE HEAT or THE PUBLIC ENEMY enter the film and beat the ever-living snot out of the wussy and "cute" gangster Cagney plays in this film.

The bottom line is that the film just isn't entertaining or interesting. There are so many better Cagney films out there--pick one of them instead.
