Plot summary

Nathan's Kingdom is a dark fantasy, coming-of-age drama about Nathan, a 25-year-old autistic man struggling with his teenage prescription-addict sister, and rather than surrendering their lives to social services, they risk it all to find a kingdom that once existed only in their imaginations.

I learned that the filmmakers decided to actually

I learned that the filmmakers decided to actually have an autistic actor play the autistic character. That alone is worth the watch. It's a movie that takes its time. I love imaginative movies that transport you, and this definitely does that. I especially was surprised by one of the VFX shots.

I love the idea of this film and

I love the idea of this film and what it attempted. And while an autistic actor playing an autistic character seems natural on its surface, it makes for anything but a natural performance. In fact, the acting throughout is awful, laughable at times, matched by the poor writing. There is a whiplash, "I hate you, I love you, I hate you" dynamic that leaves the brother/sister relationship tedious instead of complexly endearing. However, amid the failure of writing and acting there are moments of gorgeous artistic achievement. Nathan's fantasy cutscenes are visually enthralling but unfortunately not strong enough to carry the film. If you are living with autism, watch the movie an enjoy as this is the only way this film has gotten positive reviews.
