A premise that may have been absurd, back

A premise that may have been absurd, back when the movie first came out. But one that is all too real in the modern social media landscape. Cathartic is the right word for this movie. You see these characters deal with the loss of loved ones and the denial of justice. You see the regret in everyone's eye. If only they had done things differently. So it's cathartic to finally see everyone fight for justice for their loved ones. And when the ending finally hits you? It's bittersweet. The bad guy is caught but the ones lost to him are gone forever.

This was such a smart, well-crafted story line

This was such a smart, well-crafted story line, with some fine performances in the lead roles. The twist(s) got me, and all was very good for me as a viewer. I felt so strongly for Lt. Choi, the mother with the missing daughter who held desperately to the possibility of her daughter being alive, and others who had suffered at the hands of this despicable subhuman murderer. Director Jung Byung-gil's great pacing and the tone he set worked so well for this genre. Indignation was as present for me as the smarmy, self-absorbed presence of Lee, and later than of 'J'. And I appreciated the point made about how the media and the cult of personality glamorize the confessed murderer Lee, with so many girls all frothy and in a fit over him. But then they jumped the shark with the last act of the movie, with the killer escaping (again!) in such a ludicrous manner. Then there's the way they made him into some like mutant who apparently felt little if any pain, could fall from a great height and walk away, and seemingly couldn't die. And tell me how a guy maybe 5'6" 145 lbs. could fight like Captain America w/ a brown belt. Somehow like 15 people couldn't grab him, 6-7 couldn't beat him in a fight, yet a pen takes him out. So still a very fine movie, but they had the ending when they played back the recording of Soo-yeon at the press conference. Editing is such a huge key to filmmaking. 3.8 stars
