Plot summary

The Pope is in town and the night of his stay is anything but heavenly for some of Berlin′s inhabitants. Rich and poor, down-and-outs and policemen, street kids and taxi drivers - in their search for a little bit of happiness, they all end up on an amusing and at times harrowing odyssey through the labyrinth of the big city.

Das Obdachlosenpaar Hanna und Victor, die drogenabhängige Prostituierte Patty und Jochen, ihr Freier, dann noch der Angestellte Peschke mit einem schwarzen Kind, das niemand am Flughafen abholte - sie alle führen eine Existenz im Schatten dieses Besuchs. Sie sind Nachtgestalten. Ihre Geschichten um ein Taxi, ein Hundertmarkschein und die Suche nach einer Unterkunft für die Nacht werden locker miteinander verbunden. Die Charaktere wirken teilweise zwar etwas stereotyp, dennoch lebt Nachtgestalten von einem Gefühl der Sehnsucht und kleiner schöner Gesten der gegenseitigen Hilfe. Berlin während der 90er bei Nacht, Andreas Dresen hat das Gefühl der Zeit eingefangen, als Berlin noch eine Stadt war, die in den Kinderschuhen steckte. Für mich war das damals die Stadt der versteckten Clubs, doch solche Nachtgestalten wie Patty (immer auf der Suche nach dem nächsten Fix, aber einen kurzen Moment lang von Freier Jochen ehrlich gerührt) gehörten eben auch zum Bild dieses "alten" Berlins. Die Hülle Berlins war damals noch nicht so aufpoliert, die Fassaden der Gebäude noch grau und dreckig, die Einschusslöcher aus dem Krieg nicht alle ausgebessert. Das, was wir als grossen Abenteuerspielplatz benutzten, das sah immer auch aus wie ein Ort der Einsamkeit und des Elends. Andreas Dresen betont diese triste Seite, wenn Peschke den schwarzen Jungen für eine Nacht bei sich aufnimmt. Dresen schafft das Kunststück, die Verzweiflung seiner Figuren immer wieder mit Komik zu verbinden. Wer sich noch an die schlimmen deutschen Beziehungs-Komödien aus Köln oder München aus den 90ern erinnert, der weiss diese leise Komik umso mehr zu schätzen! Nachtgestalten steht nicht nur für die "Rückkehr des Sozialen" im deutschen Kino. Nachtgestalten zeigt die Menschen und das Leben wie sie in "echt" auch vorstellbar sind. Dieser Realismus wird wundervoll ausgeleuchtet - achte mal auf die kunstvolle Farbgebung! Ein sehr sehr schönes Portrait des Nachtlebens einer Stadt, die so nicht mehr existiert. Writer/director Andreas Dresen has produced a nice little film with Nachtgestalten. It works on a level where Michael Haneke's Code inconnue failed miserably. The people, thrown together in a cold city where it is unwise to lift a finger to help a stranger in distress, are real and believable. Their actions are determined by the logic of their personalities and social position; watching Code inconnue you get the nauseating feeling that it is Haneke's pretentious opinion that is being forced down your throat; again and again. Dresen's stories allow for biting humor as well as moments of painful desperation; especially in my favourite story : that of the homeless couple in search of a hotelroom. Andreas Dresen is one of those new wave of young German directors who are pulling their country out of the oblivion where I for one thought they would be for a long time yet. Together with Tom Tykwer and Roland Suso Richter - to name but a few- Andreas Dresen is a director to watch. His script is fluent and well balanced; the direction never showy but to the point. It's a shame that good European films like Nachtgestalten don't get a general release in most countries while appalling creations like Code Inconnue do.
