Plot summary

Maja and Janne move to the barren and remote island of Stormskerry, where survival is a daily struggle. Growing up in a world of old values, Maja becomes aware of a new era: a woman can be an equal partner instead of a mere bystander. The couple have children, and life is good until trouble sets in: war arrives on the island, Janne is forced to flee from the English troops, and Maja and the children are imprisoned. The family also faces many financial difficulties and death. Years pass, but Maja remains strong and stays in Stormskerry despite all the hardships and difficulties.

Fine acting and direction, with sweeping, rugged setting

Fine acting and direction, with sweeping, rugged setting. However, arguably 43 mins too long, with the compelling peaks and troughs becoming schmaltzy as the narrative drags on.

I am not Finnish and I watched this

I am not Finnish and I watched this movie on a plane, so I can't say much about accents or the music. That said, I was utterly compelled. Yes, some parts were off-kilter or slow, but the acting was incredible, the nuance lovely, the story moving. Overly long but I really enjoyed it, and it keeps popping into my thoughts years later. Thought I would write this review as repayment for the enjoyment. Cheers!

It wasnt as good as i expected and

It wasnt as good as i expected and the only good thing about this movie was that Beppe Lantz was in it.
