Plot summary

Sanae is left a widow after her prestigious husband dies, but holds the proceeds of a million yen insurance policy. Being childless, her former in-laws have no objection to her return to her own family.

Daughters, Wives and a Mother is a 1960

Daughters, Wives and a Mother is a 1960 Japanese drama film directed by Mikio Naruse. It was written by Toshiro Ide and Zenzo Matsuyama. It was produced by Sanezumi Fujimoto. It stars Setsuko Hara, Masayuki Mori and Hideko Takamine. It was distributed and produced by Toho Company, Limited. Vision wrote: "Setsuko Hara, a recent widow and the eldest daughter of a family, returns to her mother, eldest brother and his brother's wife. The family argues over what to do with the money Setsuko’s husband left her. They also argue where to put the mother. The mother seems disappointed. In the end, no mother who takes care of her family gets put into a home. She has nothing to worry about. This film hit home hard. Even the humour was on point. One of the best Japanese drama films I have ever seen. Four fries for the direction, the performances and the writing. A Julienne; a classic! Well done Mikio Naruse."

Correction to my review

I previously wrote:

The heir of this thriving family business (Akira Takarada -- best known as the romantic gloomy young scientist in "Godzilla") is immediately smitten by Hara -- and she with him (despite being more than 10 years older than he is).

On further consideration, I have determined that the actor playing the part of Setsuko's heart throb is Tatsuya Nakadai (who was NOT in Godzilla). The rest of the sentence remains true, as corrected.

As to who Akira Takarada plays, I would guess (based on a shot from Godzilla) that he plays Hara's younger brother (the photographer).
