Plot summary

Set in war-torn 15th century Kyoto, on the eve of the Onin War, the movie centers on a band of outlaws led by Hyoe, a scoundrel whose lethal sword skills place him at the tip of the spear in a deadly uprising against the corrupt Shogunate and its army, led by former friend-turned-archrival Doken.

not what I was expecting

I had watched the movie A Girl Named Ann by this same director and loved it, it was raw, hard, with no sweeteners whatsoever and I loved it because it was believable... and then I saw the trailer for this movie and looked interesting both from the scenes as the story.I wasn't expecting something as hard as the movie I mentioned but at least something with some serious background to it, but there is little of that and the whole movie was far from what I was expecting. While the subject of the movie itself is serious, the way it's done reminds more of an adventure movie like Pirates of the Caribbean or Indiana Jones than a samurai movie. I couldn't take most of it seriously and even the depiction of the poor people who suffered under the shogun looked too much like background actors rather than immersing the watcher into the historical events.And talking about immersion, the music was horrendous, sometimes they used old Western movies style songs, sometimes even electronic music and it took me all the time out of the mood, this is Japan, not the wild west or some John Wick movie, it just doesn't fit well together and there were few moments where the music helped the scenery.In the end it was just a fun movie to watch with some interesting historical background but nothing more, I was disappointed because this director can definitely make great movies as the one mentioned above, but this one was not really that great, not as bad as to not recommend it if you are in the mood for something not too serious but far from being a movie I would add to my favorites when it comes to Japanese cinema.

Wow this was great

The Movie is great the actors espacialy the 2 mains are really enyoable. The whole setup is very realistic and nicly done. Overall not much i would have liked to be different. Some over the top funny training like they always do in such movies but its kept funny and not too long so that was nice as well.Also the setup and problematic that is shown seems to be coming back to our time as well. The richt getting richer and doing whatever they like. They think of normal ppl like bugs.
