Plot summary

2123. Faced with diminishing resources, the human race can only survive through a trade-off: at the age of 50, every citizen is gradually turned into a tree. When Stefan discovers that his beloved wife Nora has voluntarily signed up for donating her own body before her time, he sets out on an adventurous journey to save her at all costs.

A good movie, but potentially could have been even better

This film is a Hungarian-Slovak animated feature about a dystopian future society that, on a devastated Earth, has developed a system to continue human life in a modified form. The city is protected by a giant dome, and its inhabitants are granted the right to live for fifty years. After that, society takes possession of their bodies and - without spoiling too much of the twist - the essence of the film revolves around a symbiosis between plant and human. Technically, it's a striking film. The animation, in which real, live-action actors are artistically transformed, is highly creative and at times delivers breathtaking and deeply emotional imagery. However, the quality isn't consistent: at its weaker moments, the film resembles a computer game, while at its best it reaches genuine heights. The story has a slightly hallucinatory quality, and the unbalanced nature of the narrative is actually the film's weakest aspect. A little less sentimentality and a bit more insight into the dystopian society could have elevated this movie to world-class status. As it stands, it remains a very intriguing experience, but the potential was greater. The originality and unpredictability are something contemporary Hollywood sorely lacks. I recommend this film to anyone who wants to see what's possible with imagination and an open mind - it's worth watching for pretty much everyone. It's simply good entertainment, even if it doesn't quite reach the depth it could have had.

An overflow of emotions over a proper storyline

I was looking forward to this movie, but surprisingly it appeared to be excessively boring and run-of-the-mill.

The sentiment of the whole storyline is very kitschy, unrefined, while the representation (the drawing) is fairly unique.

I did not manage to comprehend any of the logics of the represented world, it may be my bad. One of the most annoying weaknesses of the movie is - even when it's a sci-fi - that it never ever tried to rely on science and scientific facts.

This movie is more like a personal delirium of the directors with their subjective sense of logic or the lack of it.

I was hoping for some important notes on environmental conservation, but received a gibberish message instead.
