Motherland presents an unsettling dystopian premise about a society that controls relationships, reproduction, and family bonds, forcing people into assigned pairings and taking their children away. On paper, the concept is disturbing and full of potential, promising a tense story about power, identity, and resistance. Unfortunately, the execution struggles to match the ambition. The screenplay is often confusing, jumping between ideas without fully explaining the rules of this world. Instead of slowly building its mythology, the film rushes through important details, leaving viewers more puzzled than engaged. The central storyline, focused on a woman searching for the child she believes was taken from her, should be emotionally powerful, but it is stretched thin and repetitive. The cast is committed and delivers solid performances, yet the unclear writing prevents the characters from feeling fully developed. Visually, the film maintains a bleak and moody tone that fits the subject.
