Spoilers: If we see dots all over the place, it is our job , the audience, to connect the dots? Is that good storytelling? And I hate to say this because it might sound as some sort of inequality. But I think foreign films often strike me as stilted, formal, naive, even. Not worse than American film but different. Our culture is not theirs and the differences, the different flows of the cultures strike varying zeitgeists, and sometimes seem to clank. Is it in this film that if you do something wrong, it always gets out, and will always destroy you, or is that just overstatement -- of some moral karma that always convicts the aberrant of their own misdeeds? Jo, Agata, here was good not just because she looked like the much better actress Cloris Leachman, the late Oscar winner. The insults and hurt and even harm being whipped at each other by a four-generation family in one place might be the point here -- it is a long-term recipe for repression, oppression and depression all around, which finds expression also in sidetrack behavior like philandering, smoking, drinking, dancing a whole lot and listening to music. But the final message might be Jo is the center of everyone and everything. Four generations were in a group hug with her in the middle on a couch, nobody talking, just wanting to be together, and she looked content, as the two men in her life were standing in the doorway, somehow not fighting in that telling moment. The piece asks how can we be together, families and others, if we constantly ignore the needs and wants of others and focus on our own too much? Do we have to lean on the old institutions to get us through, like marriage, family, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren. Maybe this piece was lobbying for that, that something about women puts them in the middle and something like family holds people together despite all the woes. A pretty conservative message at the end.

My Happy, "Wounderful" Family

It takes too long to establish the story's thrust; and it lacks drive.

It's a serious film that explores the challenges that a wife and teacher and mother faces on a daily basis and she's about ready to give up. This film has the same vibe as the Georgian film, My Happy Family (Cheni Bednieri Okakhi). Agata Buzek is in the same predicament as Ia Shugliashvili in the latter film.

The final scene is oddly funny if it wasn't all about a serious matter.

My admiration for director Lukasz Grzegorzek for efforts to make this film work.
