No spoilers. It came close to working but

No spoilers. It came close to working but fell short. The writing was adequate but could have gone much farther, both for humor and pathos. The actors were, again, adequate but no more than that. the original premise is clever and lends itself to so many opportunities that, in this case, were missed. the characters are likable but you have to force yourself to maintain interest and that doesn't work.

Much better movie than the premise would indicate

Much better movie than the premise would indicate and while subject to some cliches and some contrived plotting, the performances are good and so is the chemistry among the actors. Dana Wheeler-Nicholson lends her veteran experience to add needed energy without going over the top. And while domestic abuse is never funny, showing a group of abused women empowered and having as good a time as one could expect in their situations balances the comedy and serious themes well. That's not an easy lift and to pull it off is a credit to the writer/director. This kind of movie could easily be awful to unwatchable, but it's not.
