Plot summary

Two newlyweds decide to build their dream home, and hire an old friend named Yanagisawa to design it. Unfortunately, Yanagisawa isn’t licensed to build homes, so they call in the wife’s father, a retired carpenter, to help out. When Yanagisawa’s contemporary ideas clash with the old carpenter’s traditional Japanese methods, the project becomes a huge mess.

One has to follow really closely (especially when I have to read sub-titles). Many themes running through this movie (love, respect, perfection, etc.) Found this movie entertaining!

Japanese couple building house receive an overabundance of design tips. Another "too many chefs spoil the broth, yet everything turns out OK" movie that lacks the charm of Mr. McDonald, mostly because the emphasis on ensemble story telling leaves this movie feeling a little unfocused.

Mitani's sophmore film effort starts out pretty strong

Mitani's sophmore film effort starts out pretty strong but about 1/4 of the way either it seems he gives up on certain characters or somehow was rushed into production. Which is very strange considering the amount of time (4 years later) that this film came out after his classic "Welcome Back Mr. McDonald" which is just a solid film with great acting and comic plot twist writing. This film had a solid foundation but something seriously got lost in the construction of the overall film. Worthwhile but you feel dissapointed that it was meant to be something more.
