Plot summary

In an epic snow year, five friends leave their daily lives behind to hike California's historic John Muir Trail, a 211-mile stretch from Yosemite to Mt. Whitney (the highest peak in the contiguous U.S.). Their goal - complete the journey in 25 days while capturing the amazing sights & sounds they encounter along the way. Inspired by their bond, humor, artistry & dedication, the group continues to grow: to include other artists, musicians & adventure seekers. Before they all reach the summit, hikers and viewers alike affirm the old adage - it's about the journey, not the destination. Mile... Mile & A Half is the feature-length documentary of that journey...

Beautiful scenery as we follow a group of backpackers/hikers/adventurists who are documenting their 25 day adventure along California's John Muir trail, in its entirety. I would love to do that same trek one day.

I was excited to see this documentary, knowing

I was excited to see this documentary, knowing that it took the JMT from a trail that has never required a permit lottery to a trail that required a lottery due to the ~14,000 permit requests in 2015 and then ~28,000 JMT permit requests in 2016. I assumed it required an extraordinary viewing experience to create this kind of hype and an 81% RT score. To my dismay, this doc failed to illustrate even a novice level of thru-hiking skills, or exceed the average YouTube vloggers cinematography skills. The expository component of this documentary revealed a constant need for masturbatory congratulations, the logistical challenges of mediocre wilderness film-making, the disemmination of irresponsbile backcountry etiquette, and a green light for anyone thinking it's a good idea to haul a 50-75 lbs pack on a 4 week thru-hike. They had the opportunity to edify an audience on things like "the ten essentials of hiking", leave no trace etiquette(pack out everything you pack in, including used TP), snow-blindness, altitude management and the array of other challenges people can experience on a thru-hike in the Sierras. While there were some facile shots of gorgeous scenery, I never thought "wow, what a clever way to capture that". Explore the hikers that traverse the Sierras on YouTube and you'll find more meaningful videos with better cinematography(using way less camera gear), thorough advice on logistics, preparations, planning, and how to minimize the impact of your trip on the wildnerness, so we can all keep enjoying these trails for generations to come.
