Plot summary

In 1984, Midnight Oil released their iconic record Red Sails in the Sunset. They embarked on a relentless tour around the nation performing raw and electrifying music that reignited the imagination of young Australians. That same year, their lead singer Peter Garrett committed to run for a Senate seat for the Nuclear Disarmament Party. With the mounting pressure of balancing the demands of music and politics this is the year that would make, but nearly break, Australia's most important rock and roll band. Thirty years in the making and featuring never seen before seen footage of the band on and off the stage, Midnight Oil: 1984 is the untold story of the year Australia’s most iconic rock band inspired the nation to believe in the power of music to change the world.

So they didnt save the world, not even Australia, Nuclear wasnt so scary after all but the music was great and this is one of the nest snapshots of 1980s Australia Ive seen

Hinsight is 20/20, and the Midnight Oil politics of being anti-Reagan and anti-America is obviously ham-fisted, and lacks nuance (arguably Reagan was a great friend of the left in some decisions he made). But the music was great.They were a true Australian band and sound, they could only come from Australia, and they sung to the times, a much different Australia, a more unique, spacious and homogeneous shared identity Australia, where Hawke and Keating were bringing Australia into a rare prosperity which has been undone in some way by every Prime Minister since.Ofcourse its the Oils so politics is part of the music. But the documentary us best when it sticks to the music, the atmosphere and set up beforehand of the concerts is special. Nobody remembers protest songs for the change they made. Just for being good music. What an exciting time to be in Australia Im glad I experienced some of it and glad I've seen Midnight Oil live.

Amazing footage: you don't need to be an Oils fan to love this film

That's it really - you don't need to know Midnight Oil or be a fan - the footage is so vital and engaging and so brilliantly edited (especially during the live songs) that you'll love it, even more so if you love music, or if you love documentaries. An admirable do-it-yourself band, making it work outside the corporate music industry conventions, selling out venues, writing killer riffs and brilliantly insightful lyrics of substance and catchiness.
