Totally under-rated with a star cast and genuine laugh out loud moments! Mickey Blue Eyes is a clever blend of romantic comedy and mob satire, anchored by Hugh Grant’s effortlessly charming performance as an unsuspecting Englishman entangled in New York’s Mafia circles. The film thrives on its witty dialogue and situational humor, often finding laughs in the tension between Grant’s polite demeanor and the colorful, unpredictable criminal world around him. While the plot occasionally leans on familiar romantic-comedy tropes, the sharp writing, strong supporting cast—including James Caan and Jeanne Tripplehorn—and playful nods to classic gangster films give it a distinctive flavor. It’s a movie that balances laughs with suspense, delivering a smart, enjoyable viewing experience. Not without minor pacing dips, but overall, Mickey Blue Eyes succeeds as a stylish, engaging comedy with heart and bite—a solid 4-star outing.

I watched this on DVD recently. It's a black comedy/romance of sorts, set in New York. I liked the choice of locations, and the bright scenes which feature throughout the movie. The cast are mostly convincing in their roles and do their best with what they have to work with. There are some genuinely funny scenes, mostly in the first half, and I particularly enjoyed the proposal scene set in the chinese resteraunt. Where I think the weakness lies is in the overly contrived and unconvincing second half of the story, and some very wordy dialogue used to try to explain it all. I felt that towards the end it became so absurdly complicated that it just stopped being funny. That said, I'm glad I took the time to watch it, and I can reccomend it with reservations.

I remember seeing posters for Mickey Blue Eyes

I remember seeing posters for Mickey Blue Eyes when it came out, but I didn’t really hear anything about the movie from others and it slowly faded into the past. It’s actually not a bad romantic comedy. I smirked, laughed, and gasped at times, and I generally enjoyed myself as I watched it. The plot is definitely contrived, but no more so than other rom-coms of the time. It’s no surprised that Hugh Grant plays the part of a bumbling, awkward Englishman well, and I actually liked seeing Burt Young in his role as a no-nonsense mobster. I may forget I saw Mickey Blue Eyes, but I liked it in the moment.
