Gareth Huw Evans (The Raid franchise) wrote and directed this Indonesian martial arts and crime action drama. Iko Uwais (The Raid franchise) stars in his debut film. The film's title refers to a local custom in which a young boy is sent by his family to search for livelihood and confront the challenges of life in order to become a strong man. Yuda (Uwais) arrives in Jakarta to find work, where he encounters a sister, Astri (Sisca Jessica), and brother, Adit (Yusuf Aulia), who have been shunned by their parents. Astri works as a dancer at a club, while Adit begs or steals. Yuda saves Astri from her abusive manager, who eventually kidnaps her for his European bosses, who traffic women for prostitution and for raping. The film is Gareth's debut feature film, as well as their first collaboration. The film also stars Yayan Ruthian, who also appears in Gareth's The Raid franchise. As usual, there are long takes of fight scenes here, and unlike Gareth's subsequent films, which include violent and blows and fight scenes, these fight scenes are modest. Aside from the European actors, who appeared b-grade characters in the film, the remainder of the local Indonesian cast delivered good performances. The film's ending is somewhat disappointing, but that is all you can expect here.
