Plot summary

A semi-documentary experimental 1930 German silent film created by amateurs with a small budget. With authentic scenes of the metropolis city of Berlin, it's the first film from the later famous screenwriters/directors Billy Wilder and Fred Zinnemann.

Shot in Berlin on a tiny budget shortly before The Great Depression, People on Sunday follows the flirtatious pastoral outing of four young people; each character is played by an amateur whose role was based on their actual day job. Film scholars hold this film in high regard since it's an early example of observational cinema that was made by Billy Wilder, Edgar G. Ulmer, and Robert Siodmak before the Nazis caused them to flee to Hollywood. Social historians have also gotten a lot out of People On Sunday since it paints a vivid portrait of Weimar-era Germany. I found the movie to be more of an interesting experiment than an outright masterpiece, but I do admire its bold trendsetting as well as the accidental poignancy of having its story end on an optimistic note that belies what was actually waiting for Germany later on in the decade.

I watched it whilst thinking about anything other

I watched it whilst thinking about anything other than what I was watching. There’s barely a plot. Interesting to see Berlin in the late 1920s but that’s about it. Watched on DVD.
