This is the movie that convinced me that style CAN BE a form of substance. Yes. In this case, style is substance. And I've enjoyed the style of this unique gem upon repeated viewings.

Sofia Coppola knows more about making movies than

Sofia Coppola knows more about making movies than I will ever dream to know, but why are there converse sneakers in 1770's France? If you want to make a period piece, then make a period piece, but I am not sure that's what she wanted and it just created this odd aesthetic and feel. It's not bad, it's just weird. Same thing with the modern music being used. Strange aesthetic for an otherwise good film.

A much better film than I actually expected

A much better film than I actually expected, after hearing some negative opinions on it. Of course this movie is style over substance, because in many ways this is exactly how Marie Antoinette and the French court of Versailles lived, all style and very little substance. In many ways the true star of the film is Versailles itself. And what a palatial supernova it is! So much wall to wall beauty and decadence is hard to imagine when reading the history books, but here Sophia Coppola has brought it vividly to the screen. The entire thing feels almost dreamlike, a strange gilded cage for its willing prisoners. Don't watch this film as a biopic of the famous French queen, enjoy it for what it is, a glimpse of Versailles; the most extreme expression of style over substance the world has ever seen.
