Plot summary

Just after World War I, Major Foster is incorporating new recruits into his French Foreign Legion platoon when he is sent to his former remote outpost located in the French Morocco to protect an archaeological excavation from El Krim, a Rifian leader who intends to unite all local tribes to fight the colonial government…

This movie is really bad, just plain and

This movie is really bad, just plain and simple. The writing is bad, the pacing is bad, the acting is REALLY bad, and the plot is almost completely incoherent at times. I literally had almost no idea what was going on through more than half of this movie. This has to be one of the most awful historical movies I have ever seen, if not one of the worst movies I have seen period. I mean…it’s really bad! ? It’s almost hard to explain how bad it is, but the worst part about this movie is the plot…there is no story points and nothing to really go off of at times. This has to be Gene Hackmans worst movie, and I don’t think I have seen a movie this bad in a while, and that I saying something because I watch a lot of movies, especially historical ones. The ONLY redeeming part of this movie is SOME of the desert shots and the setting…that’s it. Avoid this movie, I laughed through parts of the movie that were supposed to be serious…beacsue the acting is so bad. Even the payoff at the end, which is the only battle scene in the movie, sucked. Filmed terribly, and the characters who die in the battle…we are not even attached to or don’t know. How are we supposed to feel for these characters if we don’t care or know them? A good movie has you attached to characters, no one in this movie is a good character so by the end of the movie, instead of it trying to be an emotional battle scene, you just want the movie to end… Overall, this movie is awful. Avoid at all costs.

I enjoyed the movie even with it's shortcomings

I enjoyed the movie even with it's shortcomings, Gene Hackman as always came through. Deneuve was a pretty face but not much else. Hill is always fun to watch. Ian Holm was miscast as El Krim and that side of the movie did not receive enough development.

If you like history this is a really

If you like history this is a really good movie. Slow paced but good. Gene Hackman is in it. Shows the European influence of colonization. Great Drama!!!! Great desert scenes like Lawrence of Arabia. Lots of subplots too.
