As an introduction for children to the world

As an introduction for children to the world of classic horror movie characters, Mad Monster Party? is fantastic. It provides all the basic lore in a safe and amusing environment for kids. As a film, however, this stop-motion animated feature is a little unsteady. It’s basically a series of Halloween-themed skits and musical numbers Frankensteined together with no real plot other than getting these monsters together. The jokes, the songs, the references, and the dialogue also firmly ground this movie in the 60s. But don’t worry, Mad Monster Party, none of us are perfect...are perfect…are perfect…

I always wondered why Rankin and Bass never

I always wondered why Rankin and Bass never made any Halloween films—then I found out about Mad Monster Party? I thought, “Huh, why didn’t they ever play this on ABC when I was a kid like all the other specials?” After watching it, I know exactly why! Geez! This has to be one of the worst Rankin and Bass films I’ve ever seen—and it’s not like they’re known for great cinema! ? I didn’t expect cinematic brilliance, but I did expect something cute, campy, and feel-good. Instead, the pacing is painfully slow, the animation is rough, and the character movement is choppy—definitely not their best work. The story and characters are awful and totally unlikable. The voice acting feels mismatched and awkward, like the voices didn’t even belong to the characters half the time. It’s also weirdly inappropriate for kids, with some slightly perverted themes. Like, the redhead has these huge knockers and everyone’s lusting over her. I mean—it was the 60s, but still. ? And don’t even get me started on the music—it’s this sultry 60s cocktail lounge vibe that doesn’t fit the Halloween theme at all. The original songs are completely forgettable. I want my $3.99 back from Amazon. Watching this movie was torture!
