It’s a mad hot ballroom especially when it

It’s a mad hot ballroom especially when it comes to competing Paramount Classics and director Marilyn Agrelo present a documentary about the highs and lows of dancing for urban children In 1994 a ballroom dance competition was held in NYC for 5th graders sponsored by the nonprofit American Ballroom Theater Since then many school districts in the area have been partaking in this contest Today several kids from middle school are entering the biggest showdown involving styles of foxtrot, merengue, and ramba It’s been tough because after the events of September 11th, 2001 the kids have been adjusting to get back into their comfort zone and finding a source of happiness and celebrating All the kids come from poor and affluent neighborhoods and there’s some religious boundaries but they all share a passion of dancing next to having fun They have the advantage of learning something new not having to worry about spending on particular classes Yes these are just children, they have to understand not always being accepted as winners having that mindset ready for defeat, and there’s bound to be some awkwardness involved but it’s all about synchronicity making the dances come alive It’s also learning about etiquette and learning of other cultures Dancing is more than just winning; what matters most is what the children think of themselves and how they can absorb from it as a learning experience The film is an honest look at the lives of these kids how dancing has impacted them as well as bettered their lives, physically as well as psychologically transforming them, you see from their point of view why they need this in their lives to not fall into the trappings of the roughest parts of the city They each learn about confidence, achievement, skill, humbleness, humility not to mention to better the gap between boys and girls The dance numbers are very well shot showing how much their hard work and dedication has paid off especially with them performing to music being culturally significant/diverse The ending peters out and could’ve been better to show how the other losing teams have to cope to become better in the future plus there’s some jarring editing choices But as it stands this documentary is very earnest in showing a part of school kids’ lives many aren’t familiar with invigorating self-esteem and ambition in young hearts everywhere
