Luther was an old fat professor at the university not some fit and young guy. He was a hypocrite having no sympathy towards serfs and their struggles in Germany. Furthermore, he had no intention to reform catholicism, he simply started a conversation, a dispute, over some religious topics. That's it. It was other people who totally blew it out of proportions and declared him a hero. Hero he was not.
