Plot summary

Not the funniest Marx Brothers film, but still

Not the funniest Marx Brothers film, but still pretty good. Featuring Marilyn Monroe's slinky Hollywood debut, this farce about some stolen diamonds features some great physical comedy, funny wordplay, and hilarious situations, courtesy of Groucho, Harpo, and Chico.

Was originally supposed to be a Harpo solo

Was originally supposed to be a Harpo solo film but Chico was added because he needed the money. Groucho was edited in at the last minute because the investors insisted on a "Marx Brothers" film to make it marketable. The result is a disjointed mess, where Groucho's few scenes were obvious added later. The three Marx Brothers never share a single scene. Even with Groucho cut in at the last minute, they still ran out of money and ended up selling advertizing signs for the rooftop scenes. This is why Harpo is cavorting around billboards for Bulova Watches, Wheaties, Mobil Gasoline and other products. Worth watching once I suppose if you are a fan, but this is a really weak film.

If you don't enjoy a film that stars Harpo Marx,you need more psychiatric help than t he world can possibly provide. I don't care how the rooftop chase came about---it is an absolute classic. And t hreatening Harpo are Raymond Burr(shame on you,Perry) and Bruce Gordon(not yet Frank Nitti). THE BIG STORE is their LEAST funny film,although I wouldn't call it a failure. Yeah,that's Marilyn Monroe in the quickie eye-candy role. THIS CREATURE WON'T TALK!! There are WAYS of making him talk!! They don't know him very well,do dey?
