Plot summary

In a Canadian metropolis, failed actor David shares a place with the bookish Candy, whom he dated before coming out as gay. While David, who now waits tables, pursues an aimless romance with a younger coworker, Candy dabbles in both same-sex and heterosexual affairs. As David and Candy's odd assortment of friends — including a telepathic sex worker and an ill-tempered yuppie — pass in and out of their beds, a serial murder stalks the city's women.

A story of decadent, infantile, listless, boring, young(ish)

A story of decadent, infantile, listless, boring, young(ish) white people in (generic) North America--not decadent, etc. because of their variable sexuality, but because they do nothing in their (plentiful) free time but explore their sexuality. But then it is the story of a group of sexually-connected people under threat. (Bonus half-star for being secretly Edmontonian.)

One of those films that's eluded me ever

One of those films that's eluded me ever since I first saw it back in the VHS days, so I was happy to finally track it down on DVD from what I recall being one of those Warner Archives sales. It holds up well, with a couple of friends navigating the unsteady waters of dating in the '90s in an unnamed metropolitan area of Canada, where a serial killer is also taking victims. Well worth a rental if you get the chance.

"Love" is what cynical Thomas Gibson seeks even if he keeps everyone at bay. His roommate Ruth Marshall, effectively plays a woman confused by her love for ex lover, unrequited love by a lesbain, and her attraction to a lying yuppie. Into the mix is Matthew Ferguson as a 17-year-old fan infatuated with Gibson, Mia Krishner as a pyschic call girl, and Cameron Bancroft as Gibson's childhood friend. His BFF now has the AIDS virus. We're faced with enough characters and issues to fill a tv soap opera. "Human Remains" are victims of a serial killer in Canada, who inexplicably rips off their earrings. This is really an unnecessary subplot since the main characters either ignore or don't pay attention to the news of the killings. It seems to mean that heterosexuals are just as fucked and facing death like homosexuals. The identity of the killer and outcome is anti-climactic. What saves the movie are the performances of Gibson and Marshall, the witty dialogue, and good photography of Montreal.
