Plot summary

During a routine case in L.A., NY private investigator Harry D'Amour stumbles over members of a fanatic cult who are preparing for the resurrection of their leader Nix, a powerful magician who was killed 13 years earlier.

Lord of Illusions is a decent supernatural horror film that mixes noir-style mystery with dark fantasy elements in a way that feels different from many horror movies of the 1990s. It creates an eerie atmosphere that keeps the story interesting even when it becomes strange or over-the-top. The film stands out most for its visuals and unsettling tone. The use of illusions, cult themes, and supernatural imagery gives it a unique identity that separates it from more traditional horror films of its era. The performances are solid, and the investigation aspect of the story helps maintain suspense throughout. Mediocre at best. Barker is a great short

Mediocre at best. Barker is a great short fiction storyteller... But it is a bad novelist and an untalented director. This is yet another example of an estrambotic tale, with an interesting premise, that fails to make any impression. The dated effects don't help the immersion, but the real problem is the waste of an interesting cast that feels used like puppets or props. Those in the cult of Barker might be lenient with this, even enthusiastic, but this is a very forgotten movie for a reason.
