Near perfect casting, great acting all sabatazed by a ridiculous script. An event no matter how preposterous with a young man doing something completely out of character with and unlikely partner in a casual sex encounter simply to move the plot from the start to the inevitable ending that was supposed to give the movie meaning. Never have seen such a waste of great acting talent.

☆FYI, just to correct the lady reviewer that stated Maureen Stapleton went on to portray Edith Bunker on "All in the Family": no, that actress was JEAN Stapleton.☆ I am a huge Montgomery Clift fan, but he seemed on the verge of illness in this film, looked very fragile, and too old for the role. Perhaps too literary to be made into a film, as every conversation was theatrical sounding, overdone.
