Plot summary

It's very forgettable. The cinematography isn't bad thanks

It's very forgettable. The cinematography isn't bad thanks to the colorful memorable Italian backdrop, there is a good amount of production value, and some of the action scenes are good like the ambush but everything else is just alright. The direction isn't bad but there are times it's a bit forgettable. This has a focus problem more than anything. Is it about Mitchum's War Correspondant's character or about the Battle of Anzio and the risk of being too cautious? I hink the answer is both but the end result is so unfocused. We waste the first 20-30 minutes setting up characters in the most meandering irrelevant ways by swinging from chandliers and showing Falk is a ladies man which never comes back into the story despite spending so much time on it. The best moments are when it focuses on the actual invasion of Anzio which takes a hour to setup and the squad getting caught behind enemy lines trying to make it back. It also ends up keeping everyone together in a group and is when it feels the most focused. The sniper battle at the end waws alright I guess and it just kind of ends with them making it back. This feels like it could've just started right when the invasion starts an hour in and not much would've been lost because the character traits we do learn really come back to matter in the battle or in the end. Nothing about it is broken though. More meandering than anything. Even Mitchum is just alright in this too because it feels like half the time he's forgotten about or he's not really given much to work with. Takes over an hour before we even get a battle also. Skip This. It feels like this probably wasn't the best battle of WWII to make a movie about honestly. Just not a lot to explore.

An absolutely ridiculous movie, has to be one of the worst WWII movies of the era. Trading on Mitchem's reputation the movie sprinkled with big names but everything from the action scenes to the script alternating between amateurish to absurd.

In most classic war movies, a very long

In most classic war movies, a very long, boring part of the movie (usually the beginning) is used to explain the purpose of a battle and the plans for it. The first 25 minutes Anzio simply introduces the main characters. There aren't very many battle scenes, but there are many suspenseful action scenes throughout the movie. The character that Robert Mitchum plays in this movie is one of my favorite characters he played in his career. The fact that the main character (the hero) of this movie is an unarmed war correspondent makes the movie very unique.
