Plot summary

For 13-year-old Kaitlyn, her world threatens to collapse when she learns that her parents want to get a divorce, especially because it threatens the loss of the house they shared in Portland, which had always been Kaitlyn's home. The teenage girl has dark thoughts and lost interest in life. The breeding pigeons given to her by her mother's police colleague don't make things any better. What should she do with the birds? Then her best friend Adam gives her an idea: they could steal the very valuable racing pigeon named Granger from the local breeder Jaan Vari, sell it and use the proceeds to pay off the mortgage on her family's home. The plan initially works, but then everything seems to go wrong and Kaitlyn loses her footing even more. But surprisingly, the old man who was robbed takes care of the girl and a bond develops between the two, which ultimately leads her to a new outlook on life.

I think we’re supposed to have sympathy for Kaitlyn (Brooklyn Prince), a Gen Z teen of a broken home, but she’s a miserable malcontent who feels entitled to the cherished property of another because divorce. I’ll watch anything with Brian Cox, who plays Jaan Vari, a “pigeon fancier” in downtown Portland, but even his talent couldn’t save the story. The acting when Matt (Simon Khan) is breaking into the Russian Pidgeon mafia’s (yes, that’s what they’re called) warehouse is particularly bad. In fact, the Russian gangsters’ lack of a violent response to the retaking that the whole showdown peters out in a fizzle. The best part of the movie is what you actually learn about pigeons, but you can discover that with a cursory internet search. The young actor, Che Tafari, stood out and I’d look out for his trajectory. Otherwise, this story is probably best enjoyed by reading Susan Orlean’s piece in the New Yorker on which the movie is based. You can skip it.

It's a fine coming of age movie but they made the main character look like a full on villain.
