Plot summary

Teenager Les Anderson thinks his life can't get any worse after he flunks his driver's exam, but he's wrong. Even though he didn't receive his license, Les refuses to break his date with the cool Mercedes Lane, and he decides to lift his family's prize luxury car for the occasion. Unfortunately, Mercedes sneaks some booze along and passes out drunk, and a confused Les makes the bad decision of enlisting his rebellious friend, Dean, to help.

What a good movie. That’s all it is

What a good movie. That’s all it is however. Don’t get me wrong, I rewatch this movie every blue moon, but it just lives up to the 80s style of life we all feel gets stereotyped too much.

There is a saying: "No one will ever

There is a saying: "No one will ever understand the bond between a 10-year-old and their favorite VHS movie." This movie was that for me! Born in 1983, I am now 43 and it is still my ultimate feel-good movie. Who cares what dumb critics say - the movie was what it was meant to be! It didn't intend to be Schindler's List for goodness sake. A cute, funny, teeny movie is what we expected and what we got! The death of Corey adds an emotional aspect watching it now. I will still be watching it and feeling nostalgic when I am 83!

While the plot choice is somewhat odd, the film has several memorable moments and enjoyable characters. The only real problem "License to Drive" has is its extremely idealized ending. There's nothing wrong with a movie about inexperienced goofy teenagers getting into wacky hi-jinks, but having the main character essentially get off scot free without any consequences really lowers the impact of the film as a whole.
