Plot summary

The film is set in the year 2000 following not only Helga and Traudi's journeys but the next two generations and how Beth, Helga's daughter and Emily her granddaughter are confronted with the long-term effects of Traudi's leaving. When Helga receives a letter telling her that Traudi is close to death, it is Emily with whom Helga shares the truth. Emily volunteers to accompany her to Vienna to meet the great-grandmother she thought was dead, and experience the unraveling of the darkest of family secrets.

I read that juliet stevenson excels in this

I read that juliet stevenson excels in this movie - i think she often excels in movies, however this is a challenging role and she really does it justice. I was absorbed by this film and the characters. unlike a critic i read, i don't mind the distraction of the grandaughter's romance - it is a pretty dark theme so it provides some relief. a Moving and confronting.film.

Memorable

A thought provoking film that steadily absorbs you.The subject is hugely relevant in today's world. How crimes of the past impact the different generations, how the bonds of family can be stretched and yet brought back together. The characters are brilliantly cast. Loved the soundtrack which is a masterpiece in itself.
