Plot summary

Samuel, a widower, is taking care of his 7-year-old daughter alone. Overwhelmed and stressed out, he decides to isolate in a chalet he was renovating with his wife in the Italian Alps. Indifferent to the anger of locals who help police to hunt down migrants, he comes across a woman who fled Afghanistan. Samuel decides to help her reach the border, thinking it will take them a few hours. But an aggressive group of men comes after them…

Tense Alpine survival thriller about Afghan migrant, hostile borders, and uncertain help from a local guide

A thriller that recounts the travels of an Afghan immigrant trying to reach France from Italy via the Alps. With police officers controlling the borders. With local fascists hunting down immigrants in the mountains. With cold weather and snow (it's winter), and with Denis Ménochet as the main character, a local who knows the trails and knows those who hunt down the immigrants she will encounter. How will he behave? Will he help her? How? How will she get out of this situation, since she is in any case in an illegal situation?It's a survival film, with chases in the snow, shelters and hiding places, a game of cat and mouse in the Alps in winter and at high altitude. The viewer feels the cold. All this makes this suspenseful film an honest drama. Denis Ménochet is very good. So is Zar Amir Ebrahimi.

Nothing original

It's a good thing the film isn't long, because there's nothing particularly captivating about it. The storyline doesn't stand out from the vast majority of mountain survival films, nor from films dealing with the refugee issue. The performances of the main characters are honest. The music is the film's strong point, along with its discussion of the difficult lives of refugees. There's little development in the first two-thirds of the film, and the side stories are extremely secondary in their treatment. It's difficult to find any credibility in the last third of this cinematic offering. Good for passing a 90-minute afternoon.

So predictable, unfortunately.

This French adventure drama is quite good but foreseeable at the most, taking advantage of the migrants problem that Europe, and Italian authorities in particular - has to face. Clichés galore here, with the lead character Menochet decides to help this migrant woman. The settings are awesome and bring something of western element in this film that I will quickly forget. It could have been far better, and the ending too. I think it is too cheesy for my taste, not gloomy enough but the whole movie is not that bad. The only good thing, very unusual, I agree, is that there is no romance between this man and this woman.
