Plot summary

Céline is a free-spirited woman is married to a dull, middle manager Philippe. Her husband's co-worker pegged her as a household ornament because of the union. She befriends a woman who shows her how to juggle the couple's living expenses to get what she wants. As she asserts her independence and gradually frees herself from her husband's claustrophobic world, she turns to painting and writing about the inequity between genders.

finally saw the film last night. it was superb. a movie about feminism and universal love. plus an excellent soundtrack and performance by art ensemble of chicago in the movie. radical and hip!

Moshe Mizrahi, a moment before finding his own voice and Academy Award nominations, makes an atempt to be an avant-gardist. I don't know how the film worked in its time, but today it's a pretty tedious experience.

This is a great film, only rediscovered recently

This is a great film, only rediscovered recently. Obviously, the Art Ensemble's soundtrack is better known, and clearly helped the film get a reissue, but the film is a striking example of post new-wave and proto-feminist ideology. A really progressive film also, in terms of its attitude toward relationships and marriage, as well as womens' roles in a patriarchal society. Amazing stuff.
