The Crimson Rivers is one of those films

The Crimson Rivers is one of those films that demonstrates good potential but performs in a confusing manner, unfolding a weak story despite its dense and profound context. It is one of those films where you can see that it could have been better, consideringall the necessary elements present. I would say the main problem here is probably the source material, both from the writers and the director. The unfolding of events is confusing, not because of the pace but due to the disconnect between motivation and investigation. The main character, Inspector Pierre Niemans, seems to have a rich backstory, but the narrative barely explores this context, rather merely hinting at it with unusual tropes like Niemans' fear of dogs or his obsession with solving the case due to his expertise. All this, combined with Jean Reno's acting style, culminates in a character we want to know more about, but the film shows little. In contrast, the supporting character Lieutenant Max Kerkerian, played by Vincent Cassel, is fun and charismatic, impulsive but loyal (to the badge, to the law). Scenes where he appears consistently deliver a mix of humor and drama, a tasteful combination to watch. However, the antagonist's motivation is confusing. Avoiding spoilers, what I can say is that, given the broader context behind the murders, this motivation seems too simplistic, and without appreciating the extent of the damage tied to the motivation, all we have is what seems more like a petty grievance rather than a deep and justified desire. I cannot conclude without highlighting the cinematography, which seeks seriousness and shock. The initial murders are relatively brutal, not so much due to their graphic nature but because of the events leading to the deaths. However, the camera does not spare details, as it should be in a serious homicide investigation film rated R and courageous enough to show reality. This is what The Crimson Rivers delivers: a narrative with several potential points that could culminate in a complex and intriguing plot but ultimately, despite the seriousness of the film, ends up being just another serial killer movie where the antagonist seems like nothing more than a lunatic motivated by petty feelings.

Esta ha sido la película más popular del cine francés durante la década de los años 2000. Jean Reno ya era un actor popular y su participación en esta película sirvió para darle impulso. Adaptada de la novela de Jean-Christophe Grangé, la película respeta la historia del libro con él único detalle de que lo simplifica más y deja de lado el desarrollo de los personajes. Lo que diferencia a Les Rivières Pourpres de otras películas francesas conocidas es que está se acerca más al estilo de Hollywood. Se siente más como una película hollywoodense que como una película francesa y de ahí que la película sea menos profunda que él libro. Eso hizo que la película se sienta mucho más accesible y aunque tiene una buena trama, no es una película muy tensa como Se7en o Silence Of The Lamps. La película tiene una trama misteriosa que hace que dos policías crucen sus caminos. Lo que los une son dos casos que parecen diferentes, pero que llevan a un mismo punto con un inesperado giro sorpresa al final de la investigación. Pierre Niemans es un detective muy astuto y profesional que va descubriendo un oscuro secreto en Guernon que se aferra a eugenesia y es algo fascinante que ojalá la película hubiera explorado más a fondo. Una diferencia que tiene Niemans en la película es que no se hace mención a la investigación que sufre por usar violencia excesiva contra un hincha al inicio del libro. Max Kerkerian es un policía muy apasionado por el peligro que no duda en usar métodos poco convencionales para descubrir todo sobre la profanación en el cementerio de Sarzac. Quizás este sea el personaje más exagerado de la película, pero le da un toque a la película más cercano a la acción. Otro detalle es que este personaje es un rediseño de Karim Abdouf que es el segundo protagonista original en la novela y además es de origen árabe. Desde luego hay una buena trama y momentos que mantienen los ojos pegados a la pantallas. Lo único que hace que está película se sienta un poco menor en comparación con otras obras de suspenso es que tiene un tono ligero. El mismo autor de la novela original participó en el guión y no le molesto los cambios con tal de que la película se realizará. No escatima en mostrar los cuerpos de las escenas de los crímenes. Cómo la película se adapta más a algo hecho para el mercado estadounidense, su tono termina siendo igual al de otras películas que son más bien convencionales. Películas que no son malas, pero que son de esas que se ven para disfrutar sin que tengan que ofrecer algo memorable. Eso hace que Les Rivers sea una película de suspenso bastante fácil de seguir sin mucha complejidad y no es difícil de entender. En ese aspecto a algunos les va a poder parecer floja y aburrida porque no tiene un nivel de suspenso bastante alto o no se siente tan completa como la novela original. La intención de los realizadores era claramente hacer una película para el mercado hollywoodense y eso lograron conseguir. En parte ayudó a que la película fuera más conocida en otros territorios y también se diera a conocer la novela original, pero con el tiempo la adaptación cinematográfica ha ido pasando al olvido. Les Rivières Pourpres es otra de esas películas de los años 2000 que han tenido popularidad en su momento, pero fueron olvidadas con el pasar de los años. Es una película de suspenso que está bien y no demanda mucho para entender la historia, pero pudo haber sido mejor. Es opcional para los que quieran iniciarse en el cine de suspenso con algo mucho más fácil. Mi calificación final para esta película es un 8/10.
