Les favoris de la lune' is a strange

'Les favoris de la lune' is a strange film: its story remains opaque through the very end, though some motifs can sometimes be revealed. Its incomprehensibility is undoubtedly annoying, or even tiring, but the film remains surprisingly charming throughout and eventually succeeds in creating a cohesive work.

Les Favoris de la lune' is the first

'Les Favoris de la lune' is the first French film by Georgian born director Otar Iosseliani. There's not much point trying to explain the plot, because really there isn't much of one. The best way to describe it would be to say it's like Altman's 'Short Cuts', only Parisian style. The film follows a wealth of different characters from terrorists to New Wave singers. What does link all these characters together though is that they all seem to have something to do with an 18th century dinner set and a 19th century painting. Admittingly some of the episodes were rather funny but I'll also admit I was a little disappointed, especially since Iosseliani's earlier work looks so good. That said, it's still worth watching if you get the chance.

once is not nearly enough

I caught this extraordinary think-piece in a rep house (remember them?) in the late '80s -- and was struck by how such a tremendous film could be so little-known. In following the complex activities of a bunch of seemingly-unrelated Parisians, Soviet-Georgian-born director Otar Iosseliani does indeed suggest a world wider than any one city could contain. It's like watching a beehive, with a cast of crazies and/or criminals buzzing around manically, mostly missing one another but occasionally intersecting. In this, Favorites of the Moon somewhat recalls Nashville, Short Cuts, and Magnolia -- yet Iosseliani is less interested in "explaining" and tying-up loose ends than either Altman or Anderson. He just presents these people and their peculiar doings (some of which are very, very funny), then lets viewers figure it all out for themselves. Fascinating! In fact, the only complaint I have about Favorites of the Moon is how difficult it is to find!
