Plot summary

The plot revolves around Bernard – a schoolfriend of Olivier's who is preparing for his bac – discovering he is a bastard and taking this as a welcome pretext for running away from home. He spends a night in Olivier's bed (where Olivier describes a recent visit to a prostitute and how he did not find the experience very enjoyable). After Bernard steals the suitcase belonging to Edouard, Olivier's uncle, and the ensuing complications, he is made Edouard's secretary. Olivier is jealous and ends up in the hands of the cynical and downright diabolical Comte de Passavant, who travels with him to the Mediterranean.

Quiet loves Summary Successful adaptation, with literary breath and Proustian atmosphere, of Gide's novel about certain forbidden loves in the Paris of the 1920s. https://impresionescinefilas.wordpress.com/2021/04/20/los-monederos-falsos-the-counterfeiters/ Review: Based on André Gide's novel of the same name, the film follows in the footsteps and conflicting loves of two teenage friends, Bernard (Jules-Angelo Bigarnet) and Oliver (Maxime Berger) and their relationships with adults. The former leaves the family home to later bond with the latter's uncle and writer, Edouard (Melvil Poupaud), while Olivier, enters the publishing world early, associating himself with the noble dilettante Robert de Passavant (Patrick Mille). The director Benoit Jacquot tactfully tackles the controversial subject within the book: "forbidden" homosexual relationships and loves between adults and adolescents (with their burden of disagreement, jealousy, hope and depression), within the framework of a time where, however , a certain Parisian bourgeoisie and even family environments spoiled them or at least turned a blind eye. The film makes an opportune use of the first person of the off-screen or epistolary literary story to express what the characters do not dare to say to each other and uses correct ellipsis to suggest or avoid showing certain situations (I did not read the novel and I cannot know if it exhibits the same modesty). A certain subplot is reminiscent of Volker Schlöndorf's Young Törless, an inescapable reference (based on a novel by Robert Musil published in 1906). The tone, story, and meticulous period reconstruction of 1920s Paris immerse the viewer in a successful, but by no means, pretentious Proustian novel atmosphere in a film that sports tight performances by its entire cast. Reseña: Basada en la novela homónima de André Gide, la película sigue los pasos y los amores desencontrados de dos amigos adolescentes, Bernard (Jules-Angelo Bigarnet) y Oliver (Maxime Berger) y sus relaciones con los adultos. El primero abandona el hogar familiar para luego vincularse con el tío del segundo y escritor, Edouard (Melvil Poupaud), mientras que Olivier, ingresa precozmente en el mundo editorial relacionándose con el noble diletante Robert de Passavant (Patrick Mille). El director Benoit Jacquot aborda con tacto el polémico tema dentral del libro: las relaciones y amores homosexuales "prohibidos" entre adultos y adolescentes (con su carga de desencuentro, celos, esperanza y depresión), en el marco de una época donde, sin embargo, cierta burguesía parisina e incluso los entornos familiares los consentían o por lo menos hacían la vista gorda. El film hace un oportuno empleo de la primera persona del relato literario en off o epistolar para expresar lo que los personajes no se animan a decirse y recurre a acertadas elipsis para sugerir o evitar mostrar ciertas situaciones (no leí la novela y no puedo saber si ésta exhibe el mismo recato). Cierta subtrama recuerda a El joven Törless de Volker Schlöndorf, una referencia ineludible (basada en una novela de Robert Musil publicada en 1906). El tono, la historia y la meticulosa reconstrucción de época del París de los años 20 sumergen al espectador en un logrado clima de novela proustiana, pero de ningún modo pretencioso, en una película que luce ajustadas actuaciones de todo su elenco.

Coldly formulaic

Beautiful to look at and the atmosphere of Paris at the turn of the 19th c is conveyed very well. But the content and the characters did not ring true to me. The youths looked too young, which for obvious reasons loses the underlying homosexuality of many of the characters in the book. The actual counterfeiting of money which the youths take part in is non-existent and the inner counterfeiting of various relationships, of which there are many are not in my opinion conveyed enough. Everything is on the surface in this film and I found it coldly formulaic. There is one scene which does work and that is when a crazed writer aims a gun at a young man, but there are no bullets. It is a scene which was well placed as it precedes a scene where the bullet is in the gun, with horrific consequences. Based on the novel by Andre Gide it deserved better treatment.
