Plot summary

The young and patriotic student Demachy joins the French army in 1914 to defend his country. But he and his comrades soon experience the terrifying, endless trench war in Champagne, where more and more wooden crosses have to be erected for this cannon fodder.

Modern war films may show more of the

Modern war films may show more of the visceral brutality of conflict through gruesome close ups, but at an emotional level 'Wooden Crosses' hits as hard as any war film I've seen. The film is perfectly weighted so that just as the battle scenes start to feel overwhelming, there are moments of respite. This only serves to make them all the more effective. The cinematography is superb throughout, the camera finding a macabre beauty in the most hellish of environments. A true classic and one which I'm glad I didn't see when I was younger, I feel it's only now aged 57 that I truly appreciate its emotional impact.

An absolute classic. Gruelling and shows the horrors

An absolute classic. Gruelling and shows the horrors of the Great War with a lot of humanity from the main characters. Some interesting hand-held camera work here for a 1930's movie. The director used actual French ww1 veterans in the film, which is interesting.
