Plot summary

In 1964, Henri-Georges Clouzot's production of L'Enfer came to a halt. Despite huge expectations, major studio backing and an unlimited budget, after three weeks the production collapsed. This documentary presents Inferno's incredible expressionistic original rushes, screen tests, and on-location footage, whilst also reconstructing Clouzot's original vision, and shedding light on the ill-fated endeavor through interviews, dramatizations of unfilmed scenes, and Clouzot's own notes.

L'enfer d'Henri-Georges Clouzot / Henri-Georges Clouzot's Inferno (2009) The Making of a Never Made Film (12,461 – 22 May 2026 – Claudio Carvalho) Henri-Georges Clouzot is one of the best French directors ever, and "Inferno" is a unfinished film. When Serge Bromberg met Clouzot’s widow, he had access to footage without sound. He prepared this documentary, showing scenes mainly of Romy Schneider and Serge Reggiani, production information, statements from the crew and representation of certain scenes by Jacques Gamblin and Bérénice Bejo. They say that Clouzot demanded too much from cast and crew and shortly after Reggiani leaving the production, Clouzot had a heart attack and the film never ended. Claude Chabrol bought the screenplay from Clouzot’s widow and made the wonderful "Hell" (1994). My vote is seven. Title (Brazil): "O Inferno de Henri-Georges Clouzot" ("The Henri-Georges Clouzot's Inferno")

Bromberg semble avoir conçu son film comme le tournage du film de Clouzot. Un tournage infernal pour l'un, un enfer à monter pour l'autre. Un tournage infernal pour les acteurs, un Enfer pour les yeux des spectateurs. Les illusions d'optique nous font perdre le sens des realites et finissent par nous rendre fous nous aussi. Passionnant et angoissant documentaire sur un film inacheve.
