Casting Willow and a white male would have been boldly refreshing. Black and white Hollywood wrongly think the only way to promote racial diversity on screen is by depicting a black male and white female romance, giving no consideration for other interracial couples. In addition it further eliminates opportunities for black actresses who remain marginalized, including starring opposite a black male leading actor. Now that space has been exclusively filled by white actresses, many of whom are unknown. Meanwhile, white men, who are the leaders of all major private and public institutions in the Western world, are exclusively cast opposite white women even though they have a high rate of interracial marriage with Hispanic and Asian women, especially in the purportedly most liberal state, California. The predominant casting of black males and whites females does not promote real racial diversity; rather, it stifles it by sending the wrong message: that only black men and white women are willing to cross the line and date interracially. It further implies that the rest of us are racist. It creates a form of reverse discrimination against black women while providing more opportunities to white women, a privileged group that is already well represented on and behind screen.

Beautiful sensitive film

I guess this is s semi autobiographic story, because director Daniel Duval was also a child who was raised by foster parents, in the Allier departement; French countryside. I also guess this is a realistic feature, bringing many details, showing accurate things not necessarily known from large audiences. This is not LES HAUTS MURS, though, also a drama speaking of orphans behind the gates of an orphanage between two world wars. This movie, LES HAUTS MURS, was rough, brutal, but also poignant. This one is also gripping but far smoother, a film easily destined to all kind of people, young or less young. It is obviously a film which can't hope a large success, not gigantic gross in the end. But Daniel Duval has never been such a director; on the contrary, his filmography - even as a director, because he was mainly an actor - proves that each of this movies was something else than meaningless. All moving stories. This one is the best proof. Also a gripping performance of Annie Girardot, as usual.
