Plot summary

Elisabeth and Simon have been deeply in love for two months when Simon momentarily dies, but returns to life. Despite declining further medical tests, the couple are forced to grapple with the possibility of his death. Eventually, they tell their close friends Jérôme and Judith Martignac about the event. The Martignacs are both clerics, and Judith has just been giving a funeral service for a villager who committed suicide, though Jérôme would have nothing to do with suicide...

3.3.2011 Again, some interesting conceptual ideas. However, this time the story is better and the characters better-written. However, there's nothing visually interesting going on - it's mainly about characters talking, and the editing and cinematography are rather dull. And the story doesn't after a while amount to much either: Resnais continues his experimental cinema, this time in an attempt to actually tell a story. Which is highly experimental, for him at least.

I have seen some Resnais' earlier and later works so this metaphysical contemplation of life and death (which is mostly incomprehensible and no fun either) is no surprise to me. Resnais used to be a filmmaker who's big on philosophy and poetry; now, Resnais is a poet and philosopher with a camera.
