A film that laid the foundations of the giallo—is it essential viewing? Yes and no. It remains fairly conventional, especially since the American version (The Evil Eye) added darker music and removed much of the subtlety. The Italian version also has grating voice-overs, common at the time. We follow a classic Hitchcockian thriller (Bava fought producers for his vision), as a young woman witnesses a murder and investigates. Already, the film contains what defines giallo: a killer stalking the protagonist like a predator, disbelief from others causing self-doubt, obsession, and hidden truths suggested rather than shown. There’s a role-playing aspect: a journalist joins the investigation—a buddy-movie twist, yet suspicion lingers. Sexuality subtly fuels tension, linked to crime and life-and-death impulses, never shown frontally. The tone wavers between jazz, light scenes, and unease, making it a thriller with something more. Not better than Hitchcock, but uniquely influential.

A solid enough foundation for what would eventually become the giallo. It has some odd sequences that don't hold up that well, but the overall story, twist, etc. makes for a worthwhile watch.

It is overall suspenseful and has some nicely photographed scenes but is brought down by the slow pacing and general overacting.
