Plot summary

In Nicaragua, 1977, corruption and abuse of power are everyday occurrences under the Somoza family’s dictatorship. Eruptions of violence lead to a civil war, which the Sandinista revolutionaries win – at least for the time being. Against this backdrop, the conflict between a young soldier of the Somoza regime and his family, who sympathize with the insurgents, is illustrated.

It's 'Operation Overlord' - in Nicaragua

Released in 1980 this Nicaraguan/West German/Costa Rican feature film is a docu-drama account of the Sandinista Revolution in Nicaragua in 1979, and in particular it's effect on one family. The son Agustin is (for financial reasons) a soldier in the army of the dictator Somoza, while his father Antonio is a Sandinista. Directed by Peter Lilienthal (who co-wrote the screenplay with Antonio Skarmeta) this was shot by cinematographer Michael Ballhaus (Fassbinder and Scorsese's favourite cinematographer) in Nicaragua's second city Leon in late 1979, only several months after the victory of the Sandinista Revolution. Featuring Agustin Pereira, Carlos Catania, Oscar Castillo and Saida Mendieta Ruiz, tips on how to make a bomb, documentary footage of the Revolution over the closing credits, a melodramatic operatic climax featuring hostages, and the cry of 'Ever Onwards to Victory' from the red and black flag revolutionaries, in an above average film about the scars of war.
