Plot summary

While vacationing in Puerto Rico, a young Swedish woman falls in love with and marries a powerful local landowner. Ten years later, their marriage has turned sour; meanwhile, two Swedish doctors have arrived on the island to investigate a mysterious fever.

well this is the last Sirk movie 2 see clearly not at his peak but shows where some of those sirkian touches come from

Dernier film allemand de Douglas Sirk (encore appellé

Dernier film allemand de Douglas Sirk (encore appellé Detlef Sierck) avant son exil aux Etats-Unis. Si le film n'est pas une réussite, il reste très interessant lorsqu'on le confronte à son contexte. Le cinéaste qui n'est pas un partisant du régime nazi (il a toujours refusé d'y adhérer), est quant même obligé dans son travail de suivre les recommandations du ministère de la culture dirigé par Goebbels. Ceci expliquant cela, on comprend alors l'aspect bancal de ce film. D'un coté, le brillant suspens de ces virologue venus combattre une fièvre mortelle, mais qui devront affronter les réticences des autorités locales. Et de l'autre une cascades de chansons populaires aujourd'hui désuettes imposées pour mettre en valeur la star de la UFA, Zarah Leander. Ajoutons à cela certaines idées nazis sous-jacentes dans le scénario (l'héroine séduite par l'exotisme lointain sera punie pour avoir quittée son beau pays originel ou l'aspect de Porto Rico montré comme un nid de maladies). On comprend mieux alors la volonté de Sirk de fuire son pays où il a de plus en plus de mal à s'exprimer.
